On October 8, 2026, my siblings and I laid my dad to rest in the mountains he called home for 40 years.
If you ever had the pleasure of meeting my dad, you’ll know that he was one of the kindest, most patient, funniest, and loving humans. He cared so much about other people and would always go the extra mile to help those in need. Whether it was family, friends, coworkers, or complete strangers, he was there to love and serve.
I am who I am today because of this man. He taught me how to cook, gave me a passion for the outdoors and travel, and made sure I got an education. He was so proud of the fact that all of his kids graduated from college, something he wasn’t able to do because he was supporting a young family at the time.
Dad was funny. He was quick-witted and had the best laugh. I loved his sense of humor and optimism about life. When he got diagnosed with cancer, he refused to view it as a death sentence. He said, “It’s just a bump on the road to 90.” I wish that was true. I miss him so much and it’s hard to imagine a world without him.
Dad used to call me regularly under the pretense of a new work project for one of his restaurants. I realized pretty quickly that it was just an excuse to connect with me. We’d talk business for a few minutes and then stay on the phone for an hour just talking about life. It can’t be easy staying in touch with 7 children, but he always made an effort. And he prayed for us every night before bed.
No one is perfect, but I aspire to be half the man my father was. He taught me grace over anger, how to stay positive in the darkest times, and how to cook for 200 people a night without breaking under the pressure.
His legacy is one of love. Watching my family show up for each other this year has moved me to tears so many times. Whether because of, or in spite of, his parenting, I’ve been gifted a relationship with 6 of the best siblings I could ask for. I wouldn’t want to go through this journey with anyone else.
I love you, dad. Forever and always. You’re still my hero.
Rest in peace.
